Original Sin

Author: Dawn
07 14th, 2008

One of the concepts of Christianity that I have never got to grips with is that of Original Sin.
Original sin is said to result from the Fall of Man, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. This first sin is traditionally understood to be the cause of “original sin”, the fallen state from which human beings can be saved only by God’s grace.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says:

By his sin Adam, as the first man, lost the original holiness and justice he had received from God, not only for himself but for all human beings. Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human nature wounded by their own first sin and hence deprived of original holiness and justice; this deprivation is called “original sin”. As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin.

But are we inclined to sin?

A study conducted by the University of Chicago shows that children between the ages of seven and 12 have a natural inclination to care.

A group of nine girls and eight boys were shown animations in which only people’s hands or feet were visible.  In one, pain occurred accidentally, such as when a heavy bowl fell on a person’s hands. Another showed situations where pain was inflicted deliberately, for instance by stepping on someone’s foot.

Scans showed which parts of the children’s brains were activated as they looked at the images. When the pain was accidental, activity increased in several neural circuits involved in pain processing, but when the children saw animations depicting someone being hurt deliberately, regions of the brain involved in social interaction and moral reasoning also lit-up.  The scientists believe empathy programming is “hard-wired” into the brains of normal children and is not entirely the product of parental guidance or other nurturing.

How many people have been brought up thinking that they are inherently bad? surely this cannot result in a happy balanced human being.  This study shows that children are born ‘good’ - if this is the case then we must accept responsibility totally for the environment in which they grow up in.  By removing negativity and encouraging positive behaviour and actions we could bring about world peace.

Greece’s first gay weddings were held on Tuesday when two couples, abetted by a sympathetic local mayor, defied the threat of criminal charges and the wrath of the Orthodox church to tie the knot on a tiny Aegean island. The weddings drew immediate fire from the Orthodox church, which strongly opposes homosexuality.
“Homosexuality is a curse, a deadly sin, it goes against psychological and biological normality,” Father Stylianos Karpathiou told state NET TV.

Indonesian villagers have taken up arms to defend an ancient teak tree from their chief who wants to cut it down to finance a new village hall. They claim the spirit of “Grandfather” Danyang, the village founder who is believed to have planted the tree hundreds of years ago, had visited them in their dreams and warned them to save it from the saw.

A rich 80-year-old Indian widow has spent thousands of dollars on a feast for 100,000 people in the hope it would please the gods and open the doors of heaven for her, local officials said. Kunwar spent $37,500 (19,186 pounds) on the feast. Local officials said she spent lavishly on the meal because she had no one to bequeath her property.

Spell of the Week – Beauty Spell

Prepare:
A dish full of earth (good soil, not dry, dusty dirt).
A yellow candle
A full-sized mirror
Olive, patchouli, jasmine, or cinnamon essential oil
A small flower pot
A flower or plant seed

Anoint the candle with the essential oil you have chosen.
Place it in the centre of the dish of earth.
Light it and sit down with it between you and a mirror.
Look deeply into the mirror, concentrate on your reflection.
Without being vain, consider the things you find most beautiful about yourself- not just physically but mentally.
What is your inner beauty, what is your outer beauty?
It’s important that you never think of what you feel must be “changed”, be as positive about the beauty that you have already.

Perform this ritual 3 nights in a row.

Once the entire candle has burnt down, remove the wax from the dish.
Place the earth from the dish inside a small flower pot and plant a seed inside it.
Water it and care for it so that it grows properly.
You will soon find that your beauty will grow, flourish, and shine brighter than ever before- just as the plant grows before you, emerging from its seed.

William Shakespeare’s tombstone is to undergo a makeover, the church where the grave is located said on Wednesday, though renovators will not risk the “curse” of moving the legendary English playwright’s remains. The writer was baptised at Holy Trinity on April 26, 1564 and buried there on April 25, 1616. He is thought to have penned the warning words inscribed on the tombstone which read:

“Good friend for Jisus sake forbeare,
“To digg the dust inclosed here,
“Blest be the man that spares these stones,
“Curst be he that moves my bones.”

England’s Stonehenge was used as a burial site from its inception 5,000 years ago and remained so for more than 500 years, says a study that may shed some light on the ancient monument. Radiocarbon dating of cremated human remains from the site show that Stonehenge was used as a cemetery at its inception around 3,000 BCE until 2,500 BCE. Archaeologists estimate that the remains of 240 people may be buried in Stonehenge.

Sharon Stone, a convert to Buddhism, has claimed - to much criticism - that the earthquake that killed at least 68,000 people in China was bad karma for Beijing policy in Tibet. “I thought, is that karma - when you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?” she mused at the Cannes Film Festival. Dhammadassin, a teacher at the London Buddhist Centre, says “The earthquake in China or the cyclone in Burma have much to do with environmental factors. To invoke karma is more to do with our desire to nail things down and find someone to blame. But that’s not ours to do.”

Paranormal researchers are investigating the sightings of a girl aged between three and five in Victorian dress who appears late at night near an accident black-spot. “One person said he’d swerved to avoid a child in old-fashioned - possibly Victorian - clothes standing in the middle of the road; and then, when he looked back, there was nothing there.”

A mob has burned to death at least 11 people accused of witchcraft in an area of west Kenya where traditional beliefs run deep. Traditional African beliefs, Christianity and Islam co-exist peacefully in Kenya. But there is widespread suspicion of sorcery, particularly in west Kenya, which has a long tradition of witch doctors and faith healers.

Yoga enthusiasts have been warned by a leading Roman Catholic clergyman that they are in danger of being possessed by the Devil. Father Jeremy Davies, exorcist for Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the leader of Catholics in England and Wales, says that activities such as yoga, massage therapy, reiki or even reading horoscopes could put people at risk from evil spirits.

How Magic Works

Author: Dawn
05 22nd, 2008

Everything is energy.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form.  Magic is a form of natural science that works with energies, understanding and changing them.

“All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration and that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There’s no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and you are the imagination of yourself”
Bill Hicks

All matter is made from protons, neutrons and electrons - which in turn are made up of quarks - or vibration waves.  We use magic to send out a vibrational signal to the universe to attract or repel energy depending on our desires.

Of course we do this on a daily basis every single day through various means.

Verbal - “Can you get me a cup of coffee honey”
Written - well you’re reading this aren’t you.
Non-verbal - Everyone remember’s the ’stare of doom’ from an angry parent, dressing to impress, fragrancing the home to make it inviting etc.

All of these methods are designed to ellicit a response.  When we cast a spell we are either sending a message e.g. healing, banishing - or we are looking to receive a desired response e.g. inspiration, love/friendship, prosperity etc.

In both cases, a magic spell is designed to create a vibration that will result in the required effect.  By using tools with a similar or complementary vibration we can produce a specific signal.

An everyday example:

If we went for a job interview we would wear smart clothes, choose a pleasant aftershave/perfume, apply neutral make-up and adopt a professional demeanour.

In magic the most common tools that are utilised are herbs, crystals, rituals, the petitioning of deities, incense, oils and colours to name but a few.

So how do we know these work? through thousands of years of experimentation, story telling and record keeping, this information has been passed from generation to generation.  The simple truth is that if these tools did not work, then their use would not be remembered.  Often referred to as correspondences, this information is now readily available in books and on the internet.

Once the appropriate tools have been selected, they need to be used in a way that harnesses the personal power of the spell caster - the intent.

(It’s no good making those preparations for the job interview if you don’t want the job!)

Once the form of the spell has been decided and performed, it is then time to see what results your signal will bring you.  There is generally no set time as to how long it will take for a spell to work - the signal may take a while to travel to it’s destination, or in some cases it may not be interpreted properly.

For this reason it is important to keep records of your magical workings, you will find these notes to be useful for future reference and/or help you refine your techniques.

(My husband makes bread without a written recipe and every loaf is different as he never writes the quantities down when he experiments)

It is also important to remember the Law of Attraction i.e. like attracts like - any energy that you send out will eventually return to you, so think carefully before sending any destructive signals. T S Elliot put it perfectly when he said “Do I dare disturb the universe?” - before undertaking any magical act, ask yourself this question and if you are unsure then go back to the books, discuss the options with friends or forum members.  Pay attention to your personal energy and intuition, when the time is right - send your message, and let the universe respond.

In the News…

A dog trapped shivering underground in a tiny hole has been rescued by his frantic owner - after a psychic pinpointed where he was. Nikki, who lives on a farm with her partner and baby daughter Erin, said Marmite had gone missing after he had been let out in the morning. As Nikki spoke to the 35-year-old medium, who is based 100 miles away in London, she was told that Marmite was wedged in a man made hole with water at the bottom and concrete around it. Nikki was then able to locate Marmite, who was rescued by West Midlands Fire Bridgade.

A man who dressed up as Darth Vader and attacked the founder of Britain’s first Jedi church was spared jail. Arwel Hughes donned a black cape and bin bag and confronted Barney Jones with a metal crutch while Jones and his cousin Michael were filming themselves playing with light sabres. The Jones’ had a form of fame in North Wales after national publicity surrounding their church. Hughes, of Holyhead, bellowed “Darth Vader” as he hit Barney Jones over the head with the crutch and punched his cousin in the thigh.

The Vatican’s chief astronomer says there is no conflict between believing in God and in the possibility of “extraterrestrial brothers” perhaps more evolved than humans. Asked if he was referring to beings similar to humans or even more evolved than humans, he said: “Certainly, in a universe this big you can’t exclude this hypothesis”.

The niece of the conservative head of Spain’s Catholic Church has bared her breasts in a bestselling Spanish soft porn magazine in protest at the “hypocrisy” of her uncle.
“I wanted to lay bare the hypocrisy of my uncle,” the 27-year-old mother of two told the magazine. “Through my uncle I discovered the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church which preaches one thing and does the opposite.”

From screaming skulls and headless horsemen to murdered brides and phantom farmers, English folklore is full of spine-tingling ghost stories.  Authors Jennifer Westwood and Jacqueline Simpson have sifted through centuries of myths, legends and local tales to compile a county-by-county guide to England’s ghosts.  One story tells how the villagers in Stanney, Cheshire, were regarded as simpletons because they were too scared to walk down a country lane where a duck lived.  Finally, some of the local men decided to ambush the bird and cut off its head. But that only made things worse.  Villagers then complained they were frightened to use the lane … because of the ghost of the headless duck.

Pagan Magic Newsletter 17 – May 2008

Welcome to the Pagan Magic newsletter, every week we will be bringing you headlines, spells, correspondences and product updates.

Apologies for the delay in getting this out this week, I hope that you all had an enjoyable Beltane.

In the News this Week …

A Grave near Colchester could be the first burial site of an ancient mystic ever to be discovered in Britain.  As sacred priests, their duties included teaching, law enforcement and possibly even burning people to death in giant wicker men. Druids dominated British culture with their mysterious magical rites in the centuries before the Roman invasion.  The extraordinary find was made at the Essex village of Stanway, near Colchester.

Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men’s penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

A man arrested after a pub psychic told a 20-year-old woman she might have been abused as a girl is a convicted child sex offender.  After the psychic’s claims last October, the woman broke down and told a 19-year-old friend of claims of abuse by the man.  The court has heard that friend told her parents she had abused as a 15-year-old but they did not believe her.

Satanic cults are on the rise in an unexpected location – Rome, says a Catholic priest.  In recent years, gruesome murders have been linked to devil worship in Italy including a case several years ago involving members of a heavy metal band named the Beasts of Satan. Band members stabbed, clubbed and buried alive two teenagers in northwest Milan.

Spell of the Week – Strong as an Oak Spell

Oaks are traditionally associated with primal male power.  This spell may be used to remedy impotence or just enhance sexual capacity.
Look for an older, strong powerful-looking oak.
Talk to the tree, whisper your situation to it, describing your needs and desires.  Request assistance.
Look down; if the tree is sympathetic, you’ll find twigs or acorns on the ground.
Actually seeing an acorn or twig fall – or even being hit on the head with one – is a profound assurance of assistance.
Leave a gift and libation for the tree; gather up your acorn or twig and carry it with you.

Herb of the Week: Hawthorn
Latin Name:
Crataegus oxyacantha
Gender:
Hot
Planet:
Mars
Element:
Fire
Deities:
Cardea
Folklore: According to Celtic mythology, Hawthorn is the most likely plant to be inhabited by fairies. If a twig of Hawthorn is tied together with red thread with twigs from an Oak and Ash, it will provide protection from fairies. One folk custom was to tie ribbons or rags onto Hawthorn trees at May Day as gifts to the fairies.
Medicinal Uses: A poultice of the pulped leaves or fruits has strong drawing powers and country people for ages have used hawthorn for treatment of embedded thorns, splinters and also for whitlows.

In the News this Week …

  • A senior Greek archaeologist has warned that the last original sculptures still adorning the Parthenon, Athens‘ iconic ancient temple, face a major pollution threat and must be removed to a museum.  Athens’ most recogniseable landmark and part of the ancient Acropolis citadel overlooking the city, the Parthenon dates back to the golden age of Athenian democracy which began in the fifth century B.C.
  • A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA’s estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth, after spotting the boffins had miscalculated.  Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth.NASA had previously estimated the chances at only 1 in 45,000.
  • Sutton Wizard Man’ and pagan chief priest Conrad Pugsley emerged triumphant from court today after convincing a jury that he had a right to carry a knife around with him.  The colourful dragon master was arrested in Sutton High Street in June last year and charged with having a paper knife as an offensive weapon.  Mr Pugsley 58, of Durand Close, Carshalton, pleaded not guilty, claiming he had reasonable excuse - that the knife is part of his religious regalia.
  • Fortune-tellers, mediums and spiritual healers marched on Downing Street on Friday to protest against new laws they fear will lead to them being persecuted and prosecuted.  Organisers say that replacing the Fraudulent Mediums Act of 1951 with new consumer protection rules will remove key legal protection for “genuine” mediums.

In the News this Week …

  • Thailand’s combative prime minister has lashed out at a famous fortune teller for predicting his new government’s downfall in another military coup.  Samak Sundaravej used his Sunday TV show to criticise Varin Buaviratlert, whose clients are rumoured to include ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra’s wife, and the man who overthrew Thaksin, former army chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin.
  • Mediums are fighting new EU rules designed to protect the public from dodgy traders, fearing that honest spiritualists could be targeted.  For the past half-century, ‘genuine’ mediums have been protected by the 1951 Fraudulent Mediums Act, under which prosecutors had to prove fraud and dishonest intent to secure a criminal conviction, which was difficult. There have been fewer than 10 convictions in the past 20 years. With that protection gone, there will now be nothing between the medium and the trading standards officer - and no need to prove fraud. Instead it will be up to the trader, in this case the medium, to prove they did not mislead, coerce or take advantage of any ‘vulnerable’ consumers.
  • The progress of medical science in the past 30 years has been so rapid that yesterday’s miracles are tomorrow’s commonplace procedures.  The suggestion, highlighted again this week, that donor patients could not only be acquiring the organs but also the memories - or even the soul - of the donor is surely one such story.
  • Black cats. A naked woman riding a killer whale. Snakes. Swords. Occult symbols. A wizard with a staff that shoots lightning bolts. Moons. Stars. A dragon holding the Earth in its claws.
Welcome to the world of the Pentagon’s $32 billion (£16 billion) “Black Budget” – the US military’s top-secret research programmes.
