The athame's primary use is for ritual and magical purposes only, to direct energy; if things such as herbs or cords need to be cut, another knife called a boline - a white-handled knife - is used. The Triple Aspect is a way for us to understand the three major stages of human life, as well as the natural cycles i.e. sewing, growing, harvest. In the feminine aspect this is known as the Maiden, Mother and Crone, and is often depicted by the Triple Moon symbol. Maiden This aspect represents youth and innocence. The Maiden is hopeful, optimistic and has a desire to change the world for the better. She is associated with the season of spring and the waxing moon. Mother The Mother represents nurturing and fertility. Knowledge and experience lead her to encourage forethought in her plans and actions. She is associated with summer and the full moon. Crone The Crone is free from the drive to change the world or reproduce. She represents wisdom and completion. She understands the events that she has accomplished. She is associated with winter and the waning moon.
