Made from broom corn, grown specifically for constructing besoms, the handles are made of unvarnished pine wood with a cord threaded through the end for ease of hanging. The besom's components are of both masculine and feminine orientation. The handle, a stave, is masculine in nature while the the bristles are feminine. The besom is an important part of handfasting ceremonies in some traditions. The couple jumps over the besom during the ceremony as a fertility rite.
