These divination sticks are made from Holly - cut and collected with the tree's permission. They have been made and inscribed whilst the artist was in a spiritual trance.
Ogham is an Early Medieval alphabet, it is sometimes referred to as the "Celtic Tree Alphabet", based on a High Medieval Bríatharogam tradition ascribing names of trees to the individual letters. Divination by using ogham symbols is mentioned in Tochmarc Étaíne, a tale in the Irish Mythological Cycle.
It is claimed that the Druids used the Ogham or the Coelbren tree-alphabets for divination... Divination need not be simple fortune-telling - an attempt to see into the future. It can be an effective means of revealing hidden dynamics - whether they be within oneself or within a relationship, or within a group. Divination then becomes a means of gaining self-knowledge and a deeper understanding of the hidden causes behind appearances. Seen in this way it becomes ...another means to go beyond the surface, to plumb the depths, to look at causes rather than effects. - Druidry.org
