Singing Bowls

Singing bowls are a type of bell, rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, standing bells sit with the bottom surface resting. The sides and rim of singing bowls vibrate to produce sound. Traditionally used throughout Asia, today they are employed worldwide for meditation, relaxation, healthcare, personal well-being and religious practice.

Listening to the sound of a singing bowl stops one's internal dialogue, making the bowls an excellent tool for meditation, centring, and inducing shamanic trance states. The actual act of playing a bowl is a meditation in itself. Whilst playing bowls we can rise up into communion with the divine realm through entering into the mystical world of the muse of sound.

The bowl is placed on a a cushion on a surface, or held on the flat of the hand and struck with a wooden mallet, which may be covered in velvet, plastic or leather. The sides of the bowl vibrate and resonate to produce harmonic sounds that are said to induce a sense of deep relaxation, and centre the left and right sides of the brain to a perfect balance. The overtones produced by singing bowls are understood to affect the chakras directly, helping to balance them and bring about harmony of mind and body.
